It's a philosophical trap, where immortality is not a gift, but a punishment, repeating cycle after cycle. Mickey Barnes is a volunteer, but not a hero. He is expendable. In a future where colonies survive on dead planets, humanity has found a way to cheat death: a person's consciousness can be copied into a new body. And Mickey is one of them. Only this is his seventeenth iteration. Every time he dies, every time he's brought back. A new body. New scars. The same memory, but slightly blurred, as if seen through frosted glass. And then one day, everything goes wrong: the sixteenth Mickey didn't die. Now there are two of them. The colony isn't ready for this. The planet is cold, eternally dark, and the inhabitants beneath the surface are neither fully dead nor fully alive. But the real horror isn't outside, it's within. What happens when your copy begins to believe itself to be the original? Which of them has the right to life, to love, to memory? Director Bong Joon-ho transforms the familiar cosmos into a mirror of human hubris. There are no alien monsters here—only people willing to clone themselves for survival. But the more copies, the less soul. And when the seventeenth Mickey begins to feel the memories of his predecessors living within him like voices, he realizes: perhaps none of them are real anymore. The film slowly disintegrates, like the hero's consciousness—from a brilliant dystopia to quiet madness. The scenes depict white snow, black laboratories, and cold light that gives no warmth. And somewhere in the distance is the first Mickey, the one who once simply wanted to save humanity. Now he saves only one thing—the feeling of still being human. |
