Eve is an ancient primordial supernatural being in the television series Supernatural, known as the Mother of Monsters, the progenitor of most known biological monsters on Earth. She is the origin of most monster species encountered by hunters and represents an independent force, neither demonic nor angelic.
Origin
Eve existed long before humans began hunting supernatural creatures. The series does not specify who created her, but emphasizes that she is an ancient and primordial being, tied exclusively to the world of monsters. Unlike demons, which originate from human souls, the monsters created by Eve are of a different nature.
Eve calls the monsters her children and considers herself their mother. She claims that she gave them life and the right to exist, and therefore views the destruction of monsters by hunters as the extermination of her own kind.
Role in the Origin of Monsters
According to the series canon, Eve is the progenitor of most monsters, including Wraiths and other creatures. She not only created the first species but also implanted in them the ability to reproduce, allowing the monsters to continue to exist even after she was isolated from the world.
Eve is capable of altering existing monsters, making them more aggressive, intelligent, and adapted to hunting humans. In season six, this manifests itself in a series of unusually violent and atypical attacks. Specifically, Eve began creating monster hybrids, dubbed Jefferson Starships by Dean Winchester. These hybrids could have fangs like vampires and spines like Wraiths.
Return
For a long time, Eve was imprisoned in Purgatory. Her children, the dragons , were able to perform a magical ritual and free her. Eve's return triggers a sharp increase in monster activity and the emergence of new, more dangerous forms.
She uses a human vessel, allowing her to move freely and interact with the world around her without attracting attention.
Personality and Worldview
Eva views herself as a mother protecting her children. She doesn't consider monsters evil and doesn't see humans as victims. From her perspective, humanity is just another species, with no greater right to exist than others.
Eva views demons with disdain, considering them twisted creatures dependent on the will of others. She views angels as fanatics who follow orders without regard for the consequences.
Abilities
Eva possesses an extremely high level of power. Her abilities include:
- creation of new monsters;
- alteration of creatures' physiology;
- rapid regeneration;
- significant physical strength;
- resistance to most weapons;
- all abilities available to her monsters, including alphas (for example, instant transformation like Alpha Shapeshifter).
She is able to survive wounds that would be fatal to normal creatures and quickly adapt to threats, making her virtually invulnerable to standard hunting methods.
Confrontation with the Hunters
Eva becomes the target of a hunt by Sam Winchester and Dean Winchester. Also drawn into the conflict is Castiel, who is trying to stop the spread of the enhanced monsters.
The Hunters realize that conventional methods are useless against Eva and are forced to search for an ancient weapon capable of destroying a creature of such magnitude.
Destruction
Eva was destroyed using a weapon created from phoenix ashes. This is the only known means capable of completely destroying her essence and overcoming her regeneration. Eva's destruction was only possible through the combined efforts of the Hunters and the Angel.
Aftermath
After Eva's death, the monsters continue to exist, but their development and coordination are significantly weakened. This confirms that, while she did not directly control each creature, her presence strengthened the monsters and guided their evolution.
Significance in the Series' Mythology
Eva occupies a unique place in the Supernatural mythology. She demonstrates that monsters are not the byproduct of demons or curses, but rather a life form in their own right, with their own history and origins. Her appearance expands the series' worldview, expanding the conflict beyond the Heaven and Hell.
Trivia and Notes
Eva appears exclusively in Season Six. She is one of the few creatures that cannot be destroyed by standard hunting methods. Despite her importance, she prefers to operate covertly, allowing her "children" to do the bulk of the work.
Eva, even as the ruler of Purgatory, is in direct conflict with the leviathans, which are known to have existed before humans and angels and reside directly in Purgatory.
