The dramatic television series "The Knick," presented by Cinemax, premiered on August 8, 2014. Over two intense seasons, it introduced viewers to the lives of Dr. John Thackery and the medical staff of Knickerbocker Hospital, located in early 20th-century New York City. The series masterfully captures the atmosphere of the era, saturating the on-screen events with both the professional challenges of medicine at the time and the profound personal dramas of the characters. Of particular interest is the fact that all twenty episodes of the show were personally directed by renowned director Steven Soderbergh, giving the project a unique artistic signature.

Even before the first season concluded, on July 10, 2014, the series was officially renewed for a second season, which also included ten episodes. Steven Soderbergh returned as director, ensuring not only the high level of production but also the development of the characters' storylines. The second season premiered on October 16, 2015, to an equally warm reception. However, the series' undeniable impact on audiences did not prevent the network from ending the project: on March 23, 2017, it was officially announced that The Knickerbocker would conclude with two seasons.

It seemed that the end had been reached, but much later, on September 25, 2020, news emerged of plans to renew the series with an updated concept. In an interview with The Playlist, director and producer Steven Soderbergh mentioned that the upcoming story will focus on Dr. Algernon Edwards. The character, played by actor André Holland, represents the perfect bridge to new themes and dramas. Interestingly, the writers of the first two seasons, Jack Amiel and Michael Begler, have already not only joined the team but even written a pilot script.

According to reports, the initiative to revive the project comes from director Barry Jenkins and André Holland himself. This time, Steven Soderbergh intends to participate not as a director, but as a producer. This approach not only promises a fresh take on the established series universe but also offers the chance to expand its boundaries thanks to the team's new creative solutions.

A brief description of the events of the series

The series "The Knick" takes viewers to the beginning of the 20th century and focuses on the work and life of the staff of one of the hospitals in New York, known as St. Nicholas Hospital, later called Knickerbocker. The plot of the series covers various aspects of medical practice at the time, including the fight against infectious diseases, the use of outdated methods and prejudices, as well as social issues such as racism, sexism and class hatred.

The main character is Dr. John Thackery, played by Clive Owen. He is a talented but completely extraordinary surgeon with brilliant skills, but also suffering from a severe addiction to drugs. His pursuit of unrealistic achievements and breakthrough medical discoveries leads to many confrontations not only with colleagues, but also with the hospital management. Through his persistence and often insane experiments at the limit of human capabilities, the series explores the primitive beginnings of medicine, showing how far doctors were willing to go to save lives.

The series also focuses on the lives of other characters, such as Nell, a young nurse seeking professional recognition in a world where women in medicine are often not taken seriously. Her interactions with doctors and her own career path highlight the racial and gender prejudices that existed at that time.

The plot unfolds against the background of social and political changes of that time. Culture, politics, and technology influence medical practice and public relations, creating a vivid picture of New York City in the early 1900s. Each episode is packed with details of daily life, including surgeries, community dramas, and personal crises that the main characters go through.
