Vikings is a Canadian-Irish historical drama television series created by Michael Hirst that aired from 2013 to 2020. Based on Scandinavian sagas, chronicles, and legends about the Vikings of the early Middle Ages, the series focuses primarily on the legendary Norwegian king Ragnar Lothbrok, as well as the fates of his family members, comrades, and descendants. Set in the 8th and 9th centuries, the series explores both the inner workings of Scandinavian settlements and the large-scale Viking expeditions to England, the Frankish realm, Iceland, and the Mediterranean, depicting the clash of pagan Norse culture with the Christian world of Europe.

Plot

A brief description of the events of the series

The Vikings series tells the story of King Ragnar Lodbrok and his offspring. Ragnar is eager to explore new territories and suggests Jarl Haraldson to carry out a risky raid on the unknown west. The Vikings capture the monastery and return with the riches, but Haraldson takes most of the captured. To better understand the English lands and their customs, Ragnar chooses the monk Athelstan as a slave.

As time passes, tension between Jarl and Ragnar increases, which eventually leads to the assassination of the ruler. After that, Ragnar Lodbrok becomes the new jarl and gathers his team to attack the Northumbrian city of Hexham, where he defeats the army of the local king Ella II.

Under the guidance of King Horik, Ragnar goes to Jarl Borg, where he meets Princess Aslaug, who soon becomes his second wife. The Vikings continue their campaigns in Britain, and one day, caught in a storm, they end up in Wessex. King Egbert decides to use them for his own purposes and offers Ragnar land in exchange for service.

Ragnar, Lagertha and his army go to Wessex to get the lands Egbert promised, but the king first asks him to win back the crown for Princess Kventrit from the kingdom of Mercia. Ragnar completes this task, and Lagertha and a group of her people build a new settlement.

After Ragnar disappears for several years, his inaction becomes known to everyone, especially after the destruction of the settlement in Wessex. His children are not happy about his return, and Ragnar begins planning a new campaign against Wessex, which ends in a loss. As a result, Ragnar is executed, and his sons unite to avenge their father's death, but soon an internal conflict begins between them.

In the sixth season, Hvitserk kills Lagertha, Bjorn is killed in battle with the Rus, Ubbe and Torvi go to the "Golden Land", but end up in Greenland, where they meet Floki. Ivar is killed during a campaign in Britain, but Hvitserk escapes and converts to Christianity. This is how the story of Ragnar Lodbrok and his children ends.

Season-by-season description of the series events

Season 1

In 793, a fictional Viking settlement lies off the coast of the Kattegat Strait. Here, a young Norwegian named Ragnar dreams of new horizons and challenges the ruler of these lands, Earl Haraldson. Inspired by the idea of ​​going beyond the usual attack routes to the east, Ragnar proposes a journey to the uncharted western lands. However, the Earl firmly rejects this bold initiative and refuses his support. Despite Ragnar's faith in his plans and the support of his brother Rollo and wife Lagertha, he is met with a categorical refusal.

Haraldson's prohibition on the use of his ships does not deter Ragnar; instead, he resolves to find a way to realize his dream. His close friend and master shipwright Floki comes to his aid, creating a unique vessel—light, fast, and incredibly maneuverable, suitable for long-distance sea expeditions. Having assembled a small but loyal crew, Ragnar sets out on a dangerous voyage west, disobeying the Earl's orders.

After navigating rough seas, the Vikings reach the shores of the Kingdom of Northumbria. Their first point of attack is a monastery on the island of Lindisfarne—a surprise attack leads to a successful raid and rich loot. Returning home with a full hold, they are met with a furious reaction from Haraldson. The ruler demands the bulk of the spoils, leaving the warriors with only one item of loot. But instead of gold or valuables, Ragnar makes an unexpected choice: the monk Athelstan, hoping to benefit from his knowledge of English culture and traditions.

Meanwhile, tensions between Ragnar and Haraldson reach their peak. Their confrontation culminates in a decisive duel, a holmgang. Ragnar emerges victorious, stripping the Earl of his power and becoming the new ruler of Kattegat. Having barely secured his position in power, he organizes a major campaign, targeting the Northumbrian city of Hexham. In a fierce battle, King Aella II's army suffers a crushing defeat.

After a successful campaign in 794, Ragnar travels to Old Uppsala, a sacred site for the Norse, where he swears fealty to the tributary King Horik. The king entrusts him with an important diplomatic mission—a journey to Götaland. There, the Norwegian leader meets Princess Aslaug, but soon finds himself embroiled in a conflict with the local Earl Borg. Negotiations escalate into a full-scale military campaign, complicated by betrayal: Ragnar's brother, Rollo, defects to the enemy, posing a serious challenge to his family and escalating the conflict.
